The Helsinki office for Universal Music straddles post-industrial and glamour pop influences, mixing masculine and feminine aspects on two levels: visual and semantic.
A glossy image of Lady Gaga welcomes us to the Finnish office of the Universal Music Group. The moderate- sized space is expanded by its double height and natural light. Part of a former factory, it is near the port in an area that has become the preferred location for communication and design firms. The blow-up image of the pop star is the first ‘feminine’ touch in this work space that mixes the atmosphere of a former industrial site with the appeal of the pop rock music world.
Jan Skolimowski of Kamp Arhitektid explains, 'The space, on two levels and totally white, was a very ‘masculine’ starting point, with its high windows, sturdy cement surfaces, invasive beams and columns. I tried to maintain and even strengthen this quality, adding a touch of glamour'.
